I had the amazing experience of seeing Ben Allison’s quartet play at my school (Knox College) about a month ago. It was one of the best jazz shows I’ve been to. All four members are great musicians, and their two guitarists, Steve Cardenas and Brandon Seabrook, had a fantastic onstage relationship. Brandon’s playing is energetic and passionate, while Steve’s is more laid-back and sparse, but they work together in a way that reminded me of Television in its complexity. This song isn’t with that same quartet, but it still showcases Ben’s remarkable ear, especially since it’s a cover – he brings to it a completely different feel from Lennon’s original.
