Cécile McLorin Salvant is a 23-year-old jazz singer who has gotten attention recently for her allegiance to standards and classic jazz tunes. Her debut album, WomanChild, comprises original tunes and songs from the 1920s and ’30s. The most recent song not written by her on the album is by Fats Waller. This video shows off her impressive vocal chops at the Detroit Jazz Festival, and the chops of her accompaniment. The whole thing is a very retro affair, both musically and stylistically – her dress looks like it’s from some hip boutique, her glasses look like they’re from Warby Parker, and her band plays like it’s the ’40s. None of this is bad, though, as they make their way through “Nobody” and “Yesterdays” sounding and looking very good.
