Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – War

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are one of my favorite jazz/soul/funk groups out right now. Its 8 members are all brothers, sons of jazz trumpeter Phil Cohran, and they perform with a rotating cast of drummers. The horns cover every part of the song except percussion – trumpets for melody and harmonies, trombones for riffs, and a sousaphone and a baritone horn for bass. This video is a great look at their interesting and striking performance style – standing in a circle with the drummer in the middle. I love how they all rock out as well while playing, bopping vigorously.

“War” is from their self-titled album, available here.
