After Amy Winehouse made a retro soul sound cool again with 2006’s classic Back to Black, Raphael Saadiq was one of the artists who made sure it wasn’t a fluke, and that soul music could have a solid representation in today’s pop world. His 2008 album The Way I See It, along with Duffy’s Rockferry and Adele’s 19 (all released in 2008), cemented this tradition. “Staying In Love” is one of the best songs from the album, and the video lives up to it completely. Plot takes a backseat to style in this video, as Raphael and a girl run away from her jealous sugar daddy through a 2-dimensional, Mad Men-style world. It’s easier to see it than to describe, so I’ll leave it at that, but I will say that I would give a kidney to have the power to have ripples come from my feet when I tapped them.
