Amadou & Mariam – Sebeke

Amadou & Mariam are among the best blind people. They met at the Institute for the Young Blind in Bamako, Mali. They gained recognition in Mali in the 1980s, and met Stevie Wonder in 1986, after which they began playing around the world. Manu Chao produced their 2004 album Dimanche à Bamako, which was followed by the album Welcome to Mali, where this track comes from. This is one of my favorite songs of theirs. They have a gift, especially on this album, for finding irresistible grooves, and “Sebeke” is… Whatever the opposite of an exception is. The guitar part is my favorite aspect, I think, be sure to listen to it carefully, because Amadou does some really cool, funky stuff.
