Average White Band’s “Pick Up the Pieces,” from their 1974 album AWB, is one of the great disco/funk records of the ’70s. I first heard this recording when I was given the remastered CD version of AWB, which has a shortened version added on at the end. I wanted to share it with a friend, and so I looked it up and found this amazing 22-minute version. The Atlantic Family is basically everyone who was signed to Atlantic Records at the time. There’s some really killer playing on here, and the groove simply never stops. There’s a section that starts at around 11 minutes, where all the horns play a “solo” together, and it seems like it would be leading up to a conclusion, but it just keeps going. This is one of my favorite live recordings. I wish there was a video.
